In an Op-Ed published by EUobserver, leaders from 13 humanitarian NGOs, including ACT Alliance EU, call on Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to defend the EU’s commitment to humanitarian aid. They urge MEPs to reflect their constituents’ strong support for helping vulnerable populations.

Despite current challenges, public backing for humanitarian efforts across Europe remains robust. Citizens continue to emphasize the importance of protecting human rights and assisting those impacted by conflicts, climate change, and global crises.

The Op-Ed calls on the EU to stay at the forefront of humanitarian action. It stresses the vital partnerships between governments, civil society organizations (CSOs), and other stakeholders in tackling these crises. The NGO leaders highlight the need to protect CSOs, who are often the first responders in volatile areas. They warn that a shrinking space for civil society poses a risk and urge EU leaders to prioritize support in their external actions.

Key Points:

  • The EU has a critical leadership role in humanitarian and development aid.
  • Overwhelming public support exists across the EU for continuing and expanding humanitarian efforts.
  • MEPs are urged to reflect their constituents’ opinions and defend aid to the most vulnerable.
  • Shrinking space for civil society is a growing risk that must be countered with stronger EU-CSO partnerships.
  • Global humanitarian challenges require sustained EU action, especially in regions most affected by conflict and climate change.

ACT Alliance EU, alongside 12 other NGOs, calls for continued collaboration with the EU to protect the rights of the most vulnerable and promote sustainable solutions through civil society partnerships.
